Soulmate by Kaiyuan Zhu
The Soulmate Building is parasitic on the top of Chungking Mansions. The post-modernist director Wong Kar-wai shot the movie, Chungking Express, discussing the missing emotional connection among the metropolitan city of Hong Kong. Based on this film, I thought about how to use different architectural space to stitch together modern people. This Building is close yet aloof about the city: It belongs to the night city, that the glass brick facade hides inside the skyline, while gradually appearing by night. Before entering, people cannot recognize the place to stay, enforcing them to explore within.
To better explain the relationship between the Soulmate Building and the surrounding cityscape, I rendered the North and the South perspective, further revealing the West and East facade in perspective view. In the final rendering, it seems to be a single completed facade, it represents the unity of the four facades and the broader city contents.
