Entering the Geneaological Research Center by Benjamin Johnson
The rendering depicts a genealogical research center I designed for my senior thesis. I conceptualized the center to uplift African American Virginia residents by educating them about their personal ancestral history. The illustration I chose depicts what someone would see when entering the space. This particular view is essential to fully appreciate the building because the core principle behind the project is the ritual process of African Americans coming ignorant of their past and leaving with historical illumination. The dark, somber entryway physically represents the patron's initial state of acute ancestral disconnection. A sliver of light eludes to the uplifting illumination within.
